New Study Says America Can Afford A $12 Minimum Wage
A bill introduced in Congress on Thursday would raise the minimum wage to $12 by 2020. A study from a union-backed think tank says the economy could support the rise, although the bill has no chance of becoming law.
Seth Wenig / AP
The liberal-leaning Economic Policy Institute (EPI) has released new research suggesting that raising the federal minimum wage to $12 is economically feasible, sustainable, and has a historical precedent.
Essentially, it's been done before — back in 1968.
The proposed increase would roughly return the purchasing power of the minimum wage, and its value relative to average wages, to levels reached at its peak that year.
The report from the EPI was released to coincide with the introduction of a new bill to raise the minimum wage, and says the increase would likely cause little to no job loss, as opponents of wage hikes have claimed. Instead, it says there's likely even more "room to maneuver" than in the 1960s, thanks to converging median wages across states, as well as increased worker productivity and education.
The Raise the Wage Act, set to be introduced Thursday by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Washington) and Rep. Robert Scott (D-Va.), would raise the federal minimum wage for nearly 38 million workers. It would also eliminate an exemption for restaurants and other businesses that are currently permitted to pay tipped workers less than the federal minimum.
The act would affect 32% of wage-earning women (21.1 million women), 37% of African-American workers, and 40% of Hispanic workers, according to a fact sheet released by the EPI and National Employment Law Project.

Hillary Clinton Wrote Columns As First Lady Advocating "Tough Measures" For Criminals
As First Lady, Clinton wrote in support of “tough prosecuting measures” and holding accountable “young people who break the law.”
Kevin Hagen / Getty Images
On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton delivered a speech at Columbia University where she outlined her views on the criminal justice system, calling for "an end to the era of mass incarceration" and advocating "alternative punishments for low-level offenders."
Clinton's remarks stood in contrast to the "tough-on-crime" policies advocated by President Bill Clinton in the 1990s.
In a column she wrote in 1998 as First Lady, Clinton expressed support for those policies, including the 1994 crime bill that put more cops on the streets and imposed harsher prison terms.
"During the 1980s, lots of tough talk failed to stem the increase in violent crime. When my husband was elected, he abandoned tough talk and replaced it with a real strategy, focused on the local level, that combined tough prosecution measures with smart prevention efforts. The Brady Bill and his 1994 crime bill cracked down on the sale of handguns to fugitives, stalkers and felons, banned 19 types of assault weapons and funded 100,000 new police officers on our streets. Communities got the tools they needed to address their own crime problems.
The President's strategy has worked. We have seen violent crime decrease each of the last six years and overall crime rates go down to their lowest level in nearly 25 years."
Clinton further argued in the column that "the same approach can work" for juveniles as for adults and condoned policies wherein "young people who break the law are held accountable."
"This same approach can work for juvenile crime. Communities all across the country are abandoning rhetoric for prosecution and prevention strategies that show real results.
San Diego County is attacking this problem with a comprehensive plan in which law enforcement, schools, public agencies and communities work together. There is zero tolerance for guns and drugs in school. Young people who break the law are held accountable. Families in trouble are directed to a wide array of support services. And at-risk youth are steered into a variety of after-school activities."
Clinton called upon Americans to demand "tough measures that punish criminal behavior."
"The debate over juvenile justice must not be framed in terms of prevention OR prosecution. We must demand both: tough measures that punish criminal behavior and protect children in custody, along with strategies and programs to keep kids out of the criminal justice system in the first place. That's the formula for federal legislation that could really decrease juvenile crime across the country. Let's hope this Congress agrees."

Bernie Sanders Has A Progressive Support Problem
The only declared candidate from the left can’t get the left to stop dreaming about Elizabeth Warren. “We’re certainly not saying that Warren shouldn’t run.”
Alex Wong / Getty
WASHINGTON — The only public, organized, progressive effort to support Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign is being run by two people who really, really, really want Elizabeth Warren to run.
At least that effort will actually promise the independent Vermont senator their actual grassroots support. Other well-known groups on the left like MoveOn and the Vermont-based Democracy For America aren't going that far.
Hours after Sanders officially declared his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination — and declared war on every progressive bogeyman in the process, including the billionaires he said have bought and sold the Republican Party and the media he says has eliminated any substance from politics — he is still second to a politician who has said dozens and dozens and dozens of times she's not interested in running for president.
At 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, moments after Sanders stepped away from his first presidential campaign press conference, a group of former Occupy Wall Street leaders launched "The People For Bernie Sanders," a grassroots effort to build support for Sanders' message through social media campaigns and "gatherings" across the country in the Vermont senator's name.
The group is led by Winnie Wong, a former OWS leader from New York, and Charles Lenchner, who was also a senior member of OWS. Lenchner also happens to be the co-founder of Ready For Warren, one of several organized efforts by the left to cajole the Massachusetts Democrat in to running for president. Wong is the co-founder of another: Artists For Warren, the celebrity-studded grassroots Warren wooing effort that also counts actor Mark Ruffalo as a co-founder. Artists for Warren is associated with MoveOn, which is also pushing Warren to run.
And as they try to build support for Sanders, Lenchner and Wong remain very, very ready for Warren.
"It isn't an either/or scenario," Wong told News in an interview. "We're certainly not saying that Warren shouldn't run."
Pressed on who The People For Bernie Sanders would support if Warren got in and they were forced to pick, Wong said that was the wrong question.
"I don't know if the allegiance would fall like that," she said, noting that the signers of the open letter on the People For Bernie Sanders website aren't representing specific organizations and aren't necessarily marching in lockstep. "If she enters the race, it means another person who would enter the debate."
The pressure on Warren to run won't stop just because Sanders is actually running for president.
"We're absolutely behind the idea of Elizabeth Warren entering the race also," she said. "At this time, we feel that the progressive alternative in the race is Bernie Sanders."
It's certainly not difficult to imagine a progressive voter who wants Warren to run for president being excited at the prospect of Sanders' run. Sanders, after all, was Warren before it was cool. In his brief press conference Thursday, and in the umpteen media appearances he sat for before and after it, Sanders clearly and without hesitation — or a script, in the case of the press conference — offered a full-throated defense of progressive ideals, from efforts to combat climate change to creating a more accessible higher education system in the style of Western Europe. (Sanders singled out Germany as a model to follow in his press conference.) Above all, his message was about taking on the billionaires he says have corrupted American politics and are sucking the life out of the middle class. It was vintage Sanders, and it sounded quite a lot like Warren.
But there are certain practicalities to presidential politics that may make the "date Bernie, marry Elizabeth" model of progressive organizing evident in the opening day of the Sanders campaign at the very least uncomfortable. There are finite resources, both financial and chronological, on the left. Sanders is well aware he needs to tap into those resources heavily if he wants to change the tenor of the Democratic race.
"Let me say this, and I say this to you honestly. One of the hesitancies I had when deciding whether to run or not was obviously dealing with money," Sanders told the press outside the Senate Thursday. "I'm not going to get money from the Koch brothers and I'm not going to raise money from billionaires. I'm going to have to raise my campaign contributions through BernieSanders.com. Small, individual contributions. That's how I'm going to do it. But I seriously wonder — and it's not just Bernie Sanders — I wonder now, in this day and age, if it's possible for any candidate who is not a billionaire or who is not beholden to the billionaire class to be able to run successful campaigns."
But for now, the left, even the most overtly Sanders-supporting left, is still fixated on Warren. Democracy For America, formed out of the remnants of Howard Dean's 2004 presidential campaign, welcomed Sanders into the race Wednesday night, praised him for his service in the progressive cause, but kept their focus on Warren. (Dean has split from the group on 2016 and is supporting Hillary Clinton.) MoveOn did basically the same thing.
DFA is staying close to Sanders, but so far it has no plans to help him with the all-important grassroots fundraising he needs to keep his nascent presidential bid competitive. DFA communications director Neil Sroka said the group is working with Sanders on an anti-Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal campaign and is "going to look for other ways to connect him with our members going forward."
"Bernie loves DFA members and DFA members love Bernie," Sroka told News in an email.
An email sent to Sanders' presidential campaign about DFA and MoveOn's support for Warren and what it means for Sanders' effort went unresponded to Thursday.
Other potential candidates are vying for the left's support versus Clinton as well. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley has attempted to pin the progressive alternative badge on his chest with full-throated opposition to President Obama's trade deals and sideswipes at Clinton. But O'Malley, like Warren, is not officially a candidate for president, though that's expected to change for him at least by the end of May.
Until Sanders can win the organized left away from its Warren daydreams, he may struggle to become anything more than a campaign sideshow. But his campaign is new, and his two-day media blitz may serve to remind progressives of his bona fides. As he walked away from his press conference, News shouted a question to him about raising grassroots money without the support of organized progressive grassroots groups like DFA or MoveOn.
Sanders ignored the question.
A staffer, surrounded by press as he walked with Sanders back to the Senate, said only, "We'll figure it out."

Amazon buys company that saves AWS customers 90% on apps
Amazon has moved to acquire yet another startup in the shape of ClusterK that includes technology that allows customers to saved thousands on Amazon Web Services (AWS).First reported by Venture Beat, the deal is worth between $20 million and $50 million (around £13 million to £32 million, or AU$25 million to AU$63 million) and it's expected that the money-saving technology will be built into Amazon's EC2 Spot Instances product. At the heart of ClusterK's offering is a piece of kit that allows customers to name their price for a share of servers running on AWS and run their applications for 10% of the price they would otherwise pay. It even includes fault tolerance when prices rise.Amazon has been seeing plenty of interest in its Spot Instances since ClusterK began offering its capabilities to companies looking to save money and Marc Parrish, an investor in the startup, explained that it has been saving firms thousands.Savings top out at $600k"They did have quite a bit of traction before in saving POC [proof of concept] guys just a ton of money, like, $500,000 or $600,000 a year," Parrish said. The deal will see ClusterK's team relocate to Amazon's HQ in Seattle with founder and chief executive Dmitry Pushkarev taking on an important role at AWS and this should all result in Spot Instances becoming even easier to access for companies in the future.Check it out: The best cloud services compared

Apple TV 2 release date, price, news and rumors
What will Apple TV 2 look like?UPDATE: A report from MacRumors today states that new customers ordering the reduced-price Apple TV are facing a one to two week wait due to "supply chain issues." For those with a calculator (or a good idea of next month's calendar), that means units won't be in customers' hands until two weeks before Apple's WWDC 2015 where the Cupertino company could show off the next Apple TV. Coincidence or mass conspiracy? You decide.Original story follows:In the battle royale of set-top boxes that has erupted over the last few years, there's always been one contender who's not afraid to quietly sit on the sidelines and garner attention by being inclusive, sleek and to-the-point, and that's Apple TV. Now, before you go down into the comments and leave a nasty retort, we know that Apple TV 2 - technically a moniker for the second version of Apple TV - has come and gone. But Apple bows to no numerical and/or logic system, and Apple TV has yet to see a true sequel, instead receiving iteration after iteration of internal upgrades. It's been about two years since the last minor change to the system and three since the last major one. Which, for a company that's bound and determined to release a new iPhone every 12 months, seems a little strange that Apple's popular streamer has been MIA since the iPhone 5. So what's the hold-up? Why hasn't Apple launched a stick to fight the Amazon Fire TV Stick or Roku Streaming Stick? Why hasn't it taken the fight to Roku 3 and Nexus Player by launching a new set-top box based on iOS 8? Honestly? It's just a matter of time. There are a ton of possibilities with Apple's next streaming system. From a small stick to a 4K streamer, from a TV service like Sling TV to a 40-inch TV, anything and everything is on the table for the future of Apple's must-own A/V accessory.Cut to the chaseWhat is it? The next generation of Apple's set-top box, the Apple TVWhen is it out? We don't know. Apple hasn't set a release date, or shown it publicly.Apple TV (fourth generation)UPDATE: New hardware could be coming sooner than we think if a report from is to be believed. The listicle site claims that Apple's World Wide Developers Conference should have both "new Apple hardware" alongside the Internet-based TV streaming service that has been rumored to be in development. Finally the report claims that Siri could also be en route to Apple's streaming system, alongside an App Store that would finally give third-party developers a crack at the little black box.The most likely path Apple TV will take is another streaming box, not unlike its third iteration. Rumors floating around the internet claim that the new box will have an 802.11ac Wi-Fi antenna, Dolby 5.1 audio, a new processor and 1GB of RAM to potentially turn out 4K streaming. If it does turn about to be a new box, chances are good it will look - and have many of the same apps as - iOS 8. This could include some of the announced Apple initiatives like HomeKit and HealthKit, as well as a few in the works, like the Beats music streaming service or live-TV streaming service. It could also have a heavy emphasis on gaming. Some fixes we're hoping for are an included wireless HD TV tuner and a slightly more open ecosphere that allows a few of Apple's closest third-party developers to develop apps for the system. A smaller streaming stick and a remote with built-in voice search would also be welcome additions, though, at this point those are more of added bonuses than necessities.Apple TV (streaming service)We'd give 2:1 odds that, like its last three iterations, Apple TV 2 is going to be a set-top box. If you're more of a gambler however, we'd say the chances Apple's got an ace up its sleeve in the form of a streaming service are about 10:1.This possible-but-not-probable scenario was first given life on the web around the same time Sling TV made a splash in the US. The only problem with this plan is that Apple would need a lot of partners - FOX, NBC, ABC, Viacom, etc… - within a short time period.Possible? Sure. Probable? Not likely. The potential package in question would have a number of channels you know and love from cable but streamed over your Internet service for a lower monthly cost than traditional vendors like Sky, Virgin, Verizon or Time Warner Cable.A service like that, exclusive to Apple TV, could be a huge differentiator and killer app for Cupertino. Whether Apple's TV streaming dreams come to fruition - or actually exist at all - however, remains to be seen.An Apple television set?The last possibility in the TechRadar crystal ball is an Apple TV … television. It's a bit of a longshot obviously, but rumors have been circling for years that Apple's got plans to go up against the likes of Sony, Samsung and LG in the TV space by offering its own brand of sets based on iOS or OS X operating systems.Apple has some skilled panel technicians on its staff (have you seen the latest MacBooks?), which means maybe an iTV isn't completely out of the question. This rumor's been around since 2010, so until we see Tim Cook on stage with a 50-inch screen on stage we're not ditching our unconnected flat-panels yet.How will Apple's iTV work? We have a few ideas. The history of Apple TVThe history of Apple TVThe first Apple TV launched back in 2006 and stuck out from the crowd by boasting its own hard drive and composite cables to hook up to then-new SD TV sets. It had a measly Intel Crofton Premium M processor and 256MB of DDR2 memory.Version 2 ditched the internal storage for a better 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi antenna, upgraded Apple A4 processor and favored streaming media over anything stored on physical drives. While some lamented the disappearance of a HDD, some appreciated the Apple TV's smaller size as a result of the change.Launching in 2012, Apple TV Version 3, the latest version of the Apple TV, didn't offer much of an upgrade over its predecessor. It still streamed media and had a streamlined user-interface based on iOS (at that time it was iOS7). Of course the processor got a bump to the A5 to handle 1080p video and it finally doubled down on RAM to a solid 512MB.Starting on March 9, 2015, the currently available Apple TV will drop to $69 (about £45, AU$90) and has first-dibs on HBO's new standalone streaming service, HBO Now.What about Apple's screen for your wrist? Build 2015: Microsoft targets IoT on its road to 1 billion Windows devices
Microsoft has announced a version of Windows 10 designed specifically for smaller computers like the Raspberry Pi 2 and Intel Minnowboard Max.The Windows 10 IoT Core Insider Preview is a little rough around the edges, and Microsoft hopes that the early preview release will spur early feedback from developers to improve the software."Our goal is to give Makers the opportunity to play with the software bits early and to listen to the feedback on what's working well and what we can do better. You may notice some missing drivers or rough edges; we look forward to receiving your feedback to help us prioritize development work," said Steve Teixeira, director of program management for the Internet of Things at Microsoft.Inside the Insider PreviewThe preview release allows makers and device builders to access Microsoft's development tools, use the Universal Windows Platform, enjoy advanced hardware capabilities and remotely debug, update and manage software running on Raspberry Pi devices.Any Raspberry Pi owner who wants to start playing around with the bits need to sign up to for the Windows 10 Insider program before they can download a copy of the Windows 10 Insider Preview. A virtual machine copy will not suffice.Final version coming this summerIn addition to this, Windows 10 has become the first ever Arduino-certified OS with the Windows Virtual Shield for Arduino and Windows Remote Arduino, the first two capabilities enabled by the partnership. This means the hardware-driving power tailored by Arduino can be combined with Windows software to create plush looking UIs, cloud connections, motion detection processing, facial recognition and a lot more. Additionally, Microsoft has extended its partnership with Huckster.IO to bring various gallery capabilities to Windows developers.Microsoft will take the feedback Raspberry Pi users provide and make improvements to the commercial release this summer with the hope that it will power them closer to the target of putting Windows 10 onto 1 billion devices.Check it out: Windows 10 release date, price, news and features

Review: Plex
The streaming media world grows more and more crowded everyday. Between Sling TV, PlayStation Vue and HBO Now, there's no shortage of streaming options as long as you're willing to shell out the cash every month. But what if - and hang in there with me - you want to stream your own media? What if you don't want to pay for something you've already paid for four years ago? What do you do then? What you do then, my friend, is download Plex, the all-in-one media sharing server that uses your PC to distribute content to any room in your house. Plex essentially acts as a faux-server, using your computer and the media you already have as a media hub for devices you grant it access to. It's been around for over seven years now, and is pretty much a staple in any media connoisseur's arsenal.SetupPlex is divided into two versions. A free, everything-and-the-kitchen-sink version of the media server software, and a paid version called Plex Pass that gives you everything and the kitchen sink plus everything in the upstairs rooms for $4.99 (£3, about AU$6) a month. The key differences between the two are the ability for Plex Pass to work with your game systems - the Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and Xbox 360 - as well as the ability to set up viewing restrictions on certain movies. The latter, though not as relevant to one-user households, is useful in stopping younger kids from watching anything they shouldn't see.Once you've decided which service is right for you and your household, it's time to run the installer and setup a Plex server. The installation is quick and painless, but the act of actually adding media to Plex - which requires setting up specifically named folders and subfolders and naming video files in a certain format - is best described as tedious, irritating and at points downright ridiculous. Stick with it, though, and you'll be rewarded ten-fold once your server goes live for the first time. Device SupportThere's nothing quite like the disappointment of buying a new piece of kit, only to learn that your favorite service isn't compatible with that hardware. But, despite how many times that has happened in the past, that won't happen with Plex.Plex is available for mobile devices running iOS, Android, Windows Phone or Windows 8, as well as a stable of set-top boxes that include the Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Ouya, Roku, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3 and Playstation 4. If you're out at a friends house and thought to left your PC running back at home, you can even use a browser to login and access your cache of shows, pictures, music, movies and podcasts.Of course, having the platform to install it on is only half the problem. The other half is having the platforms talk to each other in intelligent ways. Thankfully, Plex excels at this. If you stop at 20 minutes, 23 seconds while watching a film on your mobile device, Plex will give you the option of starting over or picking up where you left off on whatever device you use next. The only problem I've run into with Plex's inexhaustible urge to be agnostic is that sometimes the file types don't play nicely with the platform you're trying to stream to. When your PC needs to transcode a video to play on a platform it requires a bit of CPU processing to get the job done. Streaming across platforms - or Direct Stream, as Plex calls it - can cause some slow down. This didn't impact me as much as other users, but it's worth mentioning.Interface For its free-ninety nine price tag, you wouldn't be blamed for thinking Plex would skimp on its interface. Sometimes our gut reactions are wrong, however, and if you're ever looking for a shining example of that, this is the place.Plex looks, more or less, like the bookshelf on Kindle or the iBooks app on iOS. Each title is categorized by genre and given cover art - even if the file you had downloaded didn't come with any. Like your standard media player, Plex also comes with playlist, watch later and recommended features that pull data from both your personal library and any number of "channels" you install on your server. This sounds like a minor detail, I know, but it's small details like these that make Plex feel like a premium service.Plex has also recently updated the music section of the service by adding intelligent playlists and music videos from Vevo. Your music will now be more complete thanks to the additional metadata and the overall experience should feel more akin to services like Spotify and Pandora but, you know, without the constant interruption of ads.PerformancePerformance, as you might imagine, depends 95% on the connection speed of your own network.I found relatively clear playback at around 10Mbps speed both on my hardwired PC and wireless 802.11a/b/g/n tablet. The occasional dropped frame didn't necessarily kill the experience for me, though on the one or two occasions I hit pretty severe blocks of slowdown. In those moments, I did feel a twinge of frustration. That said, if you're apt to have days of 3Mbps speeds, consider going another route for your streaming setup. Final verdictIf you consider yourself a media buff and have the repository of .mkv files to back it up, Plex is everything you've been longing for. Despite some lackluster installation instructions and a convoluted process to get things up and running, I found it to be one of the most gorgeous, easy-to-use and light-weight pieces of software out there. The fact that it's free just adds icing to an already delicious cake.As long as you go in with an open mind and a quick, stable connection, Plex will not disappoint.

Microsoft is adopting a tougher stance against misleading advertisements that attempt to guide consumers onto damaging websites. In a blog post, Microsoft confirmed that the evaluation criteria in its Microsoft Malware Protection Centre will be updated from June 1 to include misleading content and downloads, indistinguishable content and malicious code."We've found that these types of advertisements often try to convince a user to do something, the consequences of which they may not fully understand, such as visiting an infected website or downloading a program that can negatively impact their browsing experience," Microsoft explainedSmartScreen Filter ready to helpThe majority of the misleading content being referred to concerns popups that attempt to get a user to download content that is not official and can cause damage to the browsing experience. Microsoft will also flag up pages with content that may seem legitimate when it is in fact far from that and the new criteria is also a lot more sensitive to the existence of malicious code on a page.Internet Explorer users will notice the changes when SmartScreen Filter is turned on and it will flash up with a red warning screen to inform them when a malicious advertisement has been detected.Check it out: Windows 10 release date, price, news and features

North Korea's Kim Jong Un Cancels His First Trip Abroad
A Kremlin spokesman said that the North Korean leader “has decided to stay in Pyongyang.”
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un canceled his planned trip to Russia next month, a Kremlin spokesman said Thursday.

However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that Russia has been told Kim "has decided to stay in Pyongyang."
"This decision is related to (North) Korea's internal affairs," Peskov said according to Reuters
Russia's foreign minister had previously said that Kim had been planning to travel to Moscow to attend events to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, Reuters reported.
However, North Korea never publicly confirmed he would be going, the Associated Press reported.
South Korean officials said that the country's spy agency had expected Kim would in fact attend, Reuters reported.
A South Korean expert told Reuters he wasn't sure why Kim decided not to.
"By visiting Russia, (Kim) would have been able to exert pressure on China and also on South Korea, and he would have been able to improve his own image by going over there with his attractive wife and speak in English, which he surely must be able to do," Yang Moo-jin said.

U.S. Threatens To Call U.N. Security On North Korean Delegation
Hayes Brown for News
UNITED NATIONS — A panel of North Korean defectors speaking out on human rights abuses in their former country was interrupted by a small group of diplomats from North Korea's U.N. mission on Thursday, leading to the U.S. Ambassador threatening to have the North Korean delegation forcibly removed. The event — "Victims Voices: A Conversation on North Korean Human Rights," organized by the United States and South Korea — featured three former North Korean citizens recounting tales of abuses they and their family suffered while in the isolated country. Early on in their testimony, however, a delegation from North Korea began to speak, attempting to drown out the panel.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power ordered the delegation's microphone be shut off, but the North Koreans continued reading out their remarks. In response, several other North Korean defectors in the crowd began shouting in Korean, denouncing the officials."We are calling U.N. security," Power informed the delegation over the din, offering to allow the North Koreans to speak at the time that had previously been allotted to them following the panel's remarks. Instead, the North Korean diplomats simply finished their statement — which was inaudible due to the cut microphone — and walked out of the room. According to one report, the delegation was accompanied by U.N. security guards as they left."I want to thank those in the audience for your patience of the interruption of the DPRK," Power said at the end of the event, using the shortened version of North Korea's official name, adding that "such statements are totally self discrediting." She also told the assembled defectors that it "must be chilling" to face down the regime shouting them down again.

Build 2015: Outlook APIs bring third-party services to 400 million users
With the new Outlook APIs, third-party developers can now bring their apps and services to Outlook.com through add-ins. Similar to the add-ons that were announced for Office at Build 2015, the Outlook APIs lets developers target the 400 million-strong Outlook.com users, and direct product integration inside Outlook.com helps simplify workflow for consumers.Microsoft announced that it is partnering with Uber, Boomerang and PayPal to help users get more done without having to switch between multiple applications.Uber integrationWith the Uber integration, users can schedule their appointments and meetings inside Outlook.com and set an alarm to remind them to schedule a ride with Uber.In a demo on stage at the Build 2015 keynote, Microsoft executives showed that a calendar appointment can be scheduled on the desktop. On the phone, when it's time, the reminder will go off, and users can swipe to schedule a ride with Uber. Once inside the Uber app on the phone, the destination address is automatically filled with the information found inside Outlook.com, so users won't have to manually type this in. This automation helps save time for users as they won't have to switch between the Outlook Calendar app and the Uber app to get the address on their mobile devices. BoomerangWith Boomerang, you'll be able to schedule your emails."Send messages at the perfect time, get a reminder if your email doesn't receive a response, and add a smart calendar assistant that lets you schedule meetings and share your real-time availability, all without leaving your email," Microsoft said of the service. The company said that it will share more of the PayPal experience later.Building add-insAdd-ins are built on open standards, like HTML, CSS3 and Javascript. Developers can also integrate with REST APIs and OAuth for more secure access. With the Outlook APIs, developers can target users on Outlook.com, Outlook Web App and Outlook desktop users. Microsoft also showed off integration with LinkedIn and Salesforce apps. With these integrations, the services check the email address fields to show the sender's LinkedIn profile or company name. This is useful for sales managers to maintain relationships and keep up to date with their clients. Read our review of Office 2016

Watch Bernie Sanders Play A Rabbi In A 1999 Comedy About A Jewish-Italian Wedding
“My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception is a ‘laugh out loud’ film full of all things we love and hate about weddings.”

Vermont's independent Sen. Bernie Sander is set to announce a presidential campaign Thursday, according to reports.
While the senator will attempt to appeal to voters by touting his staunchly-left record, Sanders has something else on his resume that might stand out to voters: comedy actor.
Sanders played "Rabbi Manny Shevitz" in the 1999 low-budget comedy My X-Girlfriend's Wedding Reception. Sanders, who appears in the trailer, makes an appearance for about two minutes midway through the movie.
The comedy, according to a description on Amazon, is about a Jewish-Italian wedding.
From Amazon:
My X-Girlfriend's Wedding Reception is a "laugh out loud" film full of all things we love and hate about weddings. A slice of life film that shows us what really happens on the most important days in some of our lives. Whether you wish to follow the love triangle between the bride, groom and ex-boyfriend or see what the bridesmaids really talk about in the powder room; this is the movie for you. Take a peek into a Jewish-Italian wedding as the families and their guests show us what we are all thinking yet never say at these events. Regardless of your heritage, you will find at least one character and one sup plot you can relate to and it might make you think for a bit before getting married.
In the film, Sanders, who grew up in Brooklyn in real life, talks about growing up watching the Brooklyn Dodgers and drags on talking about baseball.

Jeb Bush Tells Hispanic Evangelicals He Supports Earned Legal Status For Undocumented Immigrants
Focusing on his work in education in Florida, Bush got big cheers for talking about an immigration overhaul and reestablishing a strong relationship with Israel, from the largest group of Hispanic evangelicals in the nation.
Ricardo Arduengo / AP
HOUSTON — Jeb Bush said undocumented workers should be able to come out of the shadows, pay a fine, work, and eventually gain earned legal status in a speech to a major Hispanic evangelical organization Wednesday.
Speaking to the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC) with his parents George H.W. and Barbara Bush in the audience, the former Florida governor focused on his work in education in the state — but got big applause for talking about immigration and Israel.
"We have to fix the broken immigration system and that means controlling the border and making sure legal immigration is easier than illegal," he said. "But it also means dealing with 11 million undocumented workers... where they pay a fine, they work, they do what they want to do which is come out of the shadows, provide for their families and over a period of time get earned legal status."
Bush knew his audience — education is always a top issue for Latinos in the U.S. and NHCLC does much of its work in education and immigration — as he connected his experience working on education in Florida with the state's current success with Hispanic students.
He spoke of visiting 250 schools when he ran for governor the second time, and stressed his work to raise standards for students and enact a corporate tax-voucher program. He credited this work with growing the Hispanic graduation rate from 47% to 75%, 10 points above the national average, with Latinos now making up 25% of all Florida students.
The biggest applause line, however, was when Bush said the U.S. must reestablish a strong relationship with Israel to bring stability to the Middle East. At the NHCLC conference Tuesday, the Hispanic Israel Leadership Coalition (HILC) was launched which aims to be the largest pro-Israel Latino group.
The speech Wednesday followed appearances in Puerto Rico earlier in the week — two Hispanic-focused events that did not go unnoticed by Democrats. (The DNC and EMILY's List blasted Bush on Wednesday on his opposition to President Obama's immigration executive actions and his support for defunding Planned Parenthood, respectively.)
Despite the presidential emphasis surrounding Bush, his speech Wednesday made only one nod to his expected campaign, saying if he is going to go beyond considering running for president, he wants to share who he is and spoke about how his life changed in Mexico when he met his wife.
Bush argued immigration can separate the U.S. from places like Japan, which has a declining population, and Europe, which does not embrace a set of shared values.
"Immigration is a key element of our country's success," he said. "We're a nation of immigrants and it's not time to abandon something that makes us special and unique."

IBM brings us even closer to a working quantum computer
IBM has overcome two key obstacles in its quest to build a working quantum computer that will be central to its future computing plans.Big Blue demonstrated that it has become the first company to produce simultaneous error detection of the two quantum errors and created a design that makes its quantum computer highly scalable. When it comes to error detection it has solved a problem that has plagued the sector for a number of years and means that its machine can detect and measure the bit-flip and phase-flip quantum errors at the same time.In the design department it has devised a four quantum bit circuit in a lattice structure that allows more qubits to be added at any time. Google has employed a similar approach that sees qubits arranged in rows, the only difference being that the "linear" approach doesn't allow both types of errors to be detected at the same time.$3 billion plan"While quantum computers have traditionally been explored for cryptography, one area we find very compelling is the potential for practical quantum systems to solve problems in physics and quantum chemistry that are unsolvable today. This could have enormous potential in materials or drug design, opening up a new realm of applications," said Arvind Krishna, senior VP and director of IBM ResearchThe advances being made in the quest for a workable quantum computer are being made as part of the $3 billion (about £1.75 billion, or AU$ 3.20 billion) that IBM pledged to invest in research and development over the next five years from July 2014.Check it out: Quantum computer trips and falls in test against regular PC

Build 2015: Continuum for Windows 10 for phones puts a PC in your pocket
At Build 2015, Microsoft showed off a new feature for Windows 10 for phones called Continuum. Similar to how Continuum works on tablets and 2-in-1 hybrids to scale between touch and desktop experiences, Continuum for phones will turn your Windows 10 smartphone into a very personal PC.With Continuum for Windows 10 for phones, once a user plugs in a keyboard, mouse and monitor - a KVM - apps on your phone will scale up to not only fit the larger external display, but also provide for a desktop experience.Essentially this means that the single-pane view of Outlook Mail on Windows 10 for phone will now show up in a more productive three-pane view on an external monitor. This allows you to quickly triage your emails without having to hit frequently hit the back button to switch between your list of emails and viewing the content of a specific email.Scaling upOnce the phone is plugged in, a familiar Start menu with Live Tiles will appear on the bottom left of the screen. For users on Windows 10 on the desktop, this interface brings a lot of continuity to how Windows will look on a PC and on a phone connected to an external display. With Excel, rather than a blown-up, touch-optimized view that you would see natively on Windows Phone, once a monitor is attached, users will see a more productive view of their Excel content, similar to how Excel 2016 would look on the PC."Here, you'll see Excel running on the phone," said Joe Belfiore, Microsoft Corporate Vice President of the Operating Systems Group, during the demo. "But [it] looks the same as on the PC."Given the larger display and more screen real estate of an external monitor, Excel doesn't need to show large cells that are typically displayed on the phone for a finger-friendly UI. Instead, Excel could display more cells so you can see more of your data at a quick glance without having to constantly scroll. This experience is like a desktop.Microsoft credits its Universal apps for this desktop experience. "It's the same code," Belfiore said when talking about how PowerPoint looks the same on his display that's connected to a Windows 10 Lumia over HDMI as on the screen of a PC or Surface Pro 3. A PC in your pocketFor enterprise road warriors, this approach is beneficial in that it could allow users to even leave behind a laptop to do quick computing work without sacrificing the user experience. This is also useful for those who work with sensitive information. Instead of having to use a public workstation or a shared computer when traveling, business users have access to their data and content on their own device. With Windows 10 for phone, it's like having a laptop in your pocket with apps that can scale to fit larger screen sizes when attached to a monitor, TV or projector. In developing markets where people may not have access to a traditional PC, this solution brings a PC experience in a much cheaper, portable form factor. "Individuals can be as productive on the phone if they can't buy a full PC," Belfiore said of the experience. "With Continuum for phones, we believe any phone can be your PC." Scalable Universal appsThe idea of scalable Universal apps has been done before with competing iOS and Android operating systems, but with limitations that make apps less useful at scaling on those platforms than on Windows 10 for phones. For example, on the iPhone 6 Plus, turning the phone into landscape mode would give users access to a multi-pane view. However, Apple limits this experience to the larger iPhone 6 Plus and it isn't available to the smaller iPhone 6, meaning users must choose between portability and utility. Additionally, connecting the iPhone 6 Plus to an external display doesn't allow apps to show more on the larger screen. Users get a mirrored version of their screen, so Excel for iOS in landscape mode on the iPhone 6 Plus looks the same as it does on the phone as on the monitor. With Windows 10 for phones, once connected to a display, Excel for Windows 10 for phones looks just like Excel 2016 for PCs and desktops, bringing additional utility to the end users. Build 2015: Windows 10 will beef up its store with retooled iOS and Android apps
FInding a useful app on the Windows Store was sort of like finding water in the desert. It happens, sure, but not nearly often enough. But Microsoft is on a mission to get 1 billion Windows devices in the hands of consumers, and in order to saturate that desert, it's going to need a lot more water. At the Build 2015 keynote this morning EVP of the Operating Systems Group Terry Myerson revealed the answer. "The third technology I'm announcing today is that Windows Studio will let developers reuse all the Java and C++ code from an Android app to a phone app running Windows 10," Myerson said right before announcing that re-tooled Xcode projects - the kind used to create iOS apps - will also work on Windows 10.Stop and think about that for a second. Every app that's ever been made for Android and iOS could now come to Windows 10 with a few clicks. That's huge.To put it in perspective, the Windows Phone Store has around 300,000 apps at the moment. That's a drop in the bucket compared to the 1.3 million apps on Android's Google Play store and 1.2 million apps on the iOS App Store.According to Myerson, these apps would then be able to take advantage of every product on the Windows Platform - including the Microsoft Surface tablet, Lumia Phones, Xbox One, Windows 10 PCs and laptops, and the upcoming Microsoft HoloLens. When it comes to apps, Windows 10 is about to get a seriously huge boost.Everything we know about Windows 10 for phones

In depth: What you need to know about TVs and monitors before you buy
LCD panels explainedWith all the complex technologies that help make flat panel monitors and flat-screen televisions, well, flat, it's no surprise there's some confusion about exactly what's happening behind our favorite screens. If you're in the market for a new TV or monitor, it's helpful to know what all the acronyms and spec-speak actually means for your viewing and using experience. Maybe you already appreciate the price differences between LED Full Array and LED Direct Lit TVs, but once you know how these configurations really work, you'll really start seeing their value in a completely different light. There's a lot of confusion and misconceptions about the science of panels, so this display explainer aims to give a basic breakdown of the types of displays available today. It's our hope that by the end of our two-page primer you'll be officially certified to school friends and family in screen tech 101. Plus, when it's time to go shopping for a new TV or monitor, you'll be fully informed as to what you're buying. One last note on resolution before we get started: All the panels listed - with the exception of plasma - can produce a 4K picture, but nowadays most screens typically come at resolutions of 1920 x 1080, though it's not a hard and fast rule. Now that we have that cleared up, let's start with the basics: LCDs.LCD and Light PolarizationIt's no surprise that one of the oldest flat-panel technologies is also the one with the most variant off-shoots. But to understand liquid crystal displays (LCD) you have to first wrap your head around the concept of light polarization. Polarizing light works like a filter to block and isolate specific light waves. This is why polarized sunglasses are popular, since they block out sunlight through super tiny slits that essentially stops light in its tracks. In simple terms, light waves travel vertically and horizontally, and polarized glass uses the slits to block out one of these waves at any given time. When that specific light wave passes through the glass, it can only pass through polarized glass if it is in the same orientation (horizontal or vertical) as the glass. Layers within LCD displays are oriented to let in one of these types of light waves. LCD variations - TN, VA, IPS and PLS explainedThere are several kinds of LCD displays found in today's TVs and monitors. The distinction is often not spelled out clearly on a spec sheet, but knowing what kind of display you're shopping for can make for smarter purchasing decisions.TN - Stands for Twisted Nematic, which is one of the most common types of LCDs. Its application in consumer devices use dates back to the late 1960s and traditional TN displays can still be found today in calculators, alarm clocks and budget media players. In other words, most consumer electronics you can find in a drug store. LCD is comprised of a material known as nematic liquid crystal, which is the substance that's placed between plates of polarized glass. It gets its name from the liquid crystal's reaction to an electric field. The absence of such a field twists the cell 90 degrees. Conversely, the presence of an electric field (after voltage is applied to the electrodes) forces the liquid crystal molecules to align with the field. In layman's terms that means the presence of electrical current allows light to pass through, while the lack of current means the pixel stays dark. How you can explain it to mom: Light travels one of two ways: horizontally and vertically. TN technology works as a kind of "light dam" that controls when light does and does not pass, and whether you have a lit pixel or a pixel devoid of light on your screen. Twisted nematic literally twists its light filter horizontally or vertically to block light or to let it go through.Devices you find it in: Digital watches, calculators, car instrument panel displays, first-generation flat-panel computer monitors as well as various monitors today.VA - Stands for Vertical Alignment. It's often considered the middle child of the group between TN panels and IPS displays.Like Twisted Nematic panels, Vertical Alignment panels use liquid crystals and electrical current to tilt polarized glass but have a slightly altered manufacturing process. The result is a deeper black background, better image quality, and a higher contrast ratio over traditional twisted nematic displays. As a group, vertically aligned liquid crystal molecules are more organized than TN molecules, which are neither fully vertical nor horizontal. This results in better control of light and less light leakage in VA displays. If you like great viewing angles and dark blacks, and don't mind average response time, VA monitors are fine options. How you can explain it to mom: VA monitors are better than TN panels, but still not the best LCD screen you can get.Devices you find it in: Computer monitors. You'll find them next to IPS and TN displays at the electronic store. IPS - Short for In-Plane Switching, IPS was primarily designed to solve TN's limitations, including limited viewing angles and color reproduction. Whereas TN liquid crystals slide around the panels of glass, IPS liquid crystals are kept in place using an electrical field. To generate this field, IPS panels need twice as much electricity to power the increased number of transistors. As a result, IPS displays consume more power than TN displays.Like Vertical Alignment, In-Plane Switching controls liquid crystal molecules better than Twisted Nematic. To be "in-plane" also means to be parallel with the glass outer layers, which leads to more focused light. How you can explain it to mom: IPS panels have the best color reproduction of any standard LCD display. The contrast isn't as good as LCD LED displays, but IPS panels are usually cheaper.Devices you find it in: Computer monitors, competing with VA and TN displays.PLS - Plane-to-Line Switching technically falls under the IPS classification. The only notable difference is that PLS is manufactured exclusively by Samsung, which claims that PLS is more cost-efficient to produce than IPS. With similar response times and contrast ratios, PLS is generally considered similar in nature to IPS, just manufactured by one company. That's not to say it's only found in Samsung monitors, though. Samsung makes PLS panels for other device manufacturers like Dell, AOC and even Philips. How you can explain it to mom: PLS is a tweaked version of IPS branded by Samsung.Devices you find it in: Primarily Samsung computer monitors, although Dell, AOC, and Philips buy PLS panels from Samsung for their screens as well.LED and Plasma displays explainedIt was just a couple years ago that television manufacturers started selling LCD TVs alongside LED TVs, leading to complete and utter confusion for everyone involved. Technically, LED TVs are LCD TVs, but they use an improved light source compared to older flat panel televisions. Older LCD TVs relied on cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCLFs), which operate based on two phenomena: electron discharge and fluorescence, while LEDs use - you guessed it - light-emitting diodes. Don't freak out. While the technology sounds like something only Tesla himself could understand, it's quite accessible once you wrap your head around it. Shedding a light on LEDAsk any tech lover worth their weight in silicon and they'll tell you that LED stands for light-emitting diodes, which are smaller and more energy efficient than CCFLs. LED TV's most marketable feature has been improved backlighting, but the picture quality remains unchanged compared to CCFL-based LCD televisions. Even though LED TVs have gotten less expensive over the years, home theater stores have been using the LED term more often than LCD, as it leaves buyers feeling like they're getting a newer product.LED backlight technology functions under one of three configurations: Full Array: A high-end configuration of LED, full array panels distribute the diodes evenly across the screen. Having this uniform backlight allows for more accurate local dimming, where changes in luminosity only occur in a specific part of the screen. Edge Lit: Instead of placing diodes throughout the screen, edge lit panels have bulbs along its outside edges. While this version is cheaper to produce than Full Array, the unbalanced configuration often results in an uneven spread of brightness, where the edges are brighter than the rest of the screen. Direct Lit: Direct lit screens function a lot like a budget version of Full Array. Direct Lit has a spread of diodes across the screen, but uses much fewer LEDs than Full Array. Moreover, these lights cannot be controlled separately to match a given picture's luminosity.Devices you find it in: The television market is currently dominated by LED with Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG and others all producing TVs with the tech. Some retailers are better than others in denoting whether a given TV features Full Array, Edge Lit or Direct Lit lighting, so be sure to do some research before buying.LED vs OLEDKeeping in mind that LED is essentially souped-up LCD, LED panels have gone one step further in the race for screen supremacy by trading out the filament in the bulb for a brighter, better organic substance in a technology called OLED. OLED technology is impressive in that it allows for ultra-thin, high-performance monitors. How does it do it? OLED accomplishes this with a six-layer design structure comprised of protective glass or plastic on both sides, positive and negative terminals, and a pair of layers of organic molecules in the middle. The layer with the organic molecules' interaction with the cathode are what produce the light, while color is created using filters beneath either the top or bottom layer in conjunction with photons. Combined with thousands of red, blue and green OLEDs, these diodes work similarly to LCDs as each color is switched on and off independently.Due to its thinner display, improved color reproduction, and greater brightness, OLED is often considered a step up over LCD technology. It would be adopted more widely if not for its current shortcomings, which include degradation of the organic molecules, sensitivity to water and steep price tag.How you can explain it to mom: It isn't perfect, but OLED panels are the best of the best right now. Each pixel is individually lit and therefore has impossible-to-see levels of contrast.Devices you find it in: High-end televisions including curved TVs and 4K TVs like the LG 65EC9700 and Samsung's S9C series. There's also AMOLED, which stands for "active-matrix organic light-emitting diode." It's a modified version of OLED where semiconducting film is added behind the panel. The result is a quicker response time for each pixel. AMOLED screens also benefit from a superb color spectrum as well as great contrast, which is why this technology is primarily used in smartphones and tablets. Their wide viewing angles also make them suited for curved handsets, like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. How you can explain it to mom: Whereas the pixels in OLED react to a single power source, each pixel in an AMOLED display has its own individual power source.Devices you find it in: Media players, smartphones, and digital cameras. You won't find AMOLED in TVs or monitors, but since it's a variation of OLED we determined it warranted inclusion in this explainer.Understanding plasma before it goes extinctPlasma is created when electrons are generated in gas as a result of high heat. For the purposes of TVs and monitors, plasma is contained in glass spheres as filtered light passes through them from microscopic lamps. This results in excellent black levels, one of the reasons why plasma has its share of enthusiasts, but risks of image burn-in and high energy consumption limited plasma's wider adoption. Furthermore, OLED has since outmatched plasma in terms of black levels, contrast ratio and color accuracy. Given that manufacturers have ceased production of plasma televisions, 2015 will most likely be the last year you can find plasma TVs in major retailers. How you can explain it to mom: In high heat, gas gives off electrons. Electrons light up microscopic bulbs of red, blue and green pixels and we see an ultra sharp picture. Devices you find it in: A very select number of Samsung and LG televisions. Don't expect new plasma TV models in 2016.If you're interested in learning more about the future of resolutions, check out our 4K and UHD primer. This screen tech is still some time away from going mainstream thanks to its extremely high price points, but we will see more and more 4K-and-beyond screen tech in the years to come.

Starwood Will "Eliminate Redundancies" And Get Rid Of Corporate Jet
Reporting another quarter of declining revenue, the hotel giant announced cost-cutting plans, a complete redesign of its Sheraton brand, and the cancellation of its corporate jet lease.

Hospitality giant Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide will undergo a major restructuring, the company said today, including moves to "eliminate redundancies" — often translated as layoffs — and a comprehensive redesign of its signature Sheraton brand.
The company's executives will also give up their Gulfstream IV corporate jet "because cost cutting starts at the top," said interim CEO Adam Aron on a call with analysts. "I am serious about this."
Before the call, Aron released a statement about a plan to "explore all strategic and financial alternatives to increase shareholder value." That had some analysts speculating about a possible sale of Starwood, currently valued at about $13.8 billion, to a rival hospitality company or private equity firm.
Starwood shares were trading up almost 9% in the wake of the news, hitting a record high.
Aron and Starwood CFO Thomas Mangas did not discuss the possibility of a sale on the call, but did reiterate that cost-cutting measures were in the works and would be deployed in the very near future, and that the company would stay on track with the sale of $800 million in hotel assets by the end of 2015.
"We must better manage the costs of our business," Aron said on the call. "We have an internal task force in place putting programs under a microscope to see which we will jettison and which we will sunset to eliminate redundancies and reduce our overhead costs."
Added Mangas, "We expect to implement a plan to restructure our business to eliminate redundancies and become a leaner company, which we plan to launch in the next two weeks. This initiative is expected to end in 2016, but most of it will take place in the second quarter of 2015 as we expect to move quickly with our plan."
Another part of the plan is a major revamping of the company's Sheraton brand.
"We're going to turn the company on its head and focus on Sheraton, which brings in $9 billion each year," Aron said. "Sheraton needs a boost to elevate it to a brand of choice globally and crystalize the brand standards for the hotels. We have some terrific Sheraton properties around the world and some that need some help, and we will lay out a broad and sweeping, comprehensive plan to implement in 2015."
Starwood will unveil the brand new Sheraton at a conference next month, and in the interim will also be announcing the specifics around its restructuring plan.
But something the company didn't address on the call, and showed no signs of acknowledging in the future, is Airbnb. The home rental site has chipped away at the hotel business, especially in New York and among international travelers. Even when the issue of declining revenues in New York came up, Mangas failed to mention Airbnb's impact on Starwood's properties.
"[Revenue per available room] declined in New York City, which has seen a large increase in supply over the last year," Mangas said. "We have seen the decrease in average daily rate in New York from international travelers, which we see as a result of the strong dollar."
