David Schwimmer To Topline & Produce ABC Comedy Pilot ‘Irreversible’

David Schwimmer is eyeing a return to the small screen. In his first broadcast TV role since Friends, Schwimmer has signed on as the male lead in the ABC comedy pilot Irreversible, from Peter Tolan and Sony Pictures TV. Schwimmer also will serve as a producer on the project, based on the Israeli series Bilti Hafich. I hear the premium deal also includes a future pilot directing commitment from ABC. Following his 10-season run on NBC’s mega-hit Friends, Schwimmer had focused on directing, helming two features — Run, Fatboy, Run and Trust — episodic television and two pilots, one of which, last season’s Growing Up Fisher, was picked up to series by NBC.
Related: Primetime Pilot Panic!
Irreversible, which is partially improvised in the vein of Curb Your Enthusiasm, centers on Andy (Schwimmer) and Sarah, a somewhat eccentric, self-absorbed couple, and their trials and tribulations — most of which they bring upon themselves. Bilti Hafich became an instant hit when it launched last January, ranking as the No.1 original comedy on Israeli broadcast TV and earning a second-season renewal. Sony’s adaptation sparked a heated bidding in August, scoring a rare pilot greenlight with a big, seven-figure penalty off of a pitch.
The original series’ co-creator Segahl Avin co-wrote the adaptation and may direct the pilot, which will film in New York. ... Read More »

Flag, An App That Prints & Mails Your Photos For Free, Takes Off On Kickstarter

Thanks to smartphones, digital photography has essentially become free - after the cost of the initial phone purchase, that is. Now, you no longer have to buy bulbs or film or batteries to have access to an unlimited camera roll. You can snap photos at will, and store everything the cloud. But one thing that didn't change with the times is the cost of printing out photos, which has remained stagnant over the years.

Today, a company called Flag wants to change that. It proposes a way for users to get free monthly prints of their iPhone photos, subsidized by placing advertisements on the back of each print.

Lenovo won't rip up Motorola roadmap - new Moto X on the horizon

Now that Motorola has divorced Google and run off with Lenovo, we wondered if the first fruit of their passions would be the Moto Kutcher. However we're hearing information that Motorola's device line-up for 2015 is already locked and in the pipeline, so Lenovo won't be interfering much at all.According to a source with a "pretty flawless track record" speaking to G4Games, the new Moto X is also said to be a done deal, and Lenovo won't make any alterations to the handset.Motoring aheadThe same source was unable to say whether the Moto X will arrive this year or next, but did say that Motorola's got a 6-inch phablet and a smartwatch set for 2015.So if this is true, Lenovo's acquisition won't mean many dramatic shifts for Motorola in the coming months as the two get used to their new relationship. So what WILL Lenovo's Motorola buy mean for your next smartphone?

Week in Tech: It's all Lenovo for Moto and Sky enters a new era of TV watching

Shock news from Google this week: it's selling Motorola, the smartphone firm it bought for billions, for a fraction of the price it originally paid. The lucky buyer is Lenovo, which promises to make Motorola "even more successful" and says that layoffs and cutbacks aren't in Motorola's future. More expensive phones probably are in Moto's future, though: as Gareth Beavis says: "without Google's magic supply of money, we aren't going to be seeing devices like the ultra-cheap Moto G any time soon." Looking on the bright side, more tablets and phablets should be on the horizon too. Google's acquisition of Motorola may look like a failure, says our columnist Gary Marshall, but it isn't. "Motorola is the pawn Google's sacrificing to save a much more important piece: all of Android," he says, noting that the news comes hot on the heels of Samsung agreeing to share patents and to stop messing around with the Android UI. "It isn't hard to imagine the two sides having a conversation of the 'we'll get out of the phone business if you stop buggering around with our OS and share some of your patents' variety," Marshall says. By getting Samsung closer to the mothership and giving Lenovo a boost, "Android is stronger and more focused than ever before."Is Nintendo still in the game?Focus is something Nintendo's trying to do too, and it's helping its execs concentrate by slashing their salaries: president Satoru Iwata and other board members will be taking pay cuts ranging from 20% to 50% while they get the company back on track. Profits are down 30% and sales forecasts for the quirky Wii U have been cut by more than two-thirds, and while the firm has ruled out bringing its games to smartphones it is apparently working on iOS and Android apps that complement its consoles and games. It's facing an uphill challenge: even Sony's PS Vita Slim looks more like a swansong than a device that's going to take gaming by storm in a market where the Xbox One and PS4 dominate console gaming and smartphones dominate the casual gaming market. The answer might be in health monitoring: during this week's strategy briefing, Iwata promised that Nintendo "will attempt to establish a new platform business [that] is independent from our video game platform business", which will "enable people to monitor their health". That doesn't mean wearables, though, and while the platform won't be part of Nintendo's gaming business it will connect to the games in some fashion. Nintendo says it'll tell us more later this year.Changing channelsGood news for anybody who thinks Sky's EPG is looking a bit dated: there's a new one imminent, and it'll reflect the changing way we approach TV. As Patrick Goss explains: "on-demand is brought to the fore, with Catch Up TV, TV Box Sets, Sky+ Planner and Sky Store as well as the rather necessary TV Guide." It's due in the Spring.Sky has also been chucking some money at programme makers. It's signed a new deal with HBO to continue showing the US cable channel's Emmy-hogging programmes until at least 2020, and it's also been partnering in making new programmes. The rise of rivals from the likes of BT, not to mention Netflix, has been squeezing Sky's profits, and the deal shows that Sky is keen to pay for exclusive content to keep its customers loyal. We'll help you choose the best streaming service for you

In depth: Meet the man who might be Microsoft's next CEO

After making a teary, Dirty Dancing-inspired farewell to a packed room of employees, Microsoft's departing CEO Steve Ballmer was gone. Sort of. Ballmer has until August 23 2014 at the helm, but the world's largest software and services company has already lined up his successor - if reports by Bloomberg and Re/Code are to be believed - and he could be appointed within days. That man is Satya Nadella, currently the president of Microsoft's server & tools business. He joined the company in 1992, a pivotal year for the Redmond giant that saw over 1 million advance orders placed worldwide for its Windows 3.1 operating system. But for a company of Microsoft's size and stature, being a veteran is not enough. Tipped to pip heavyweight CEOs Alan Mulally (Ford), Stephen Elop (Nokia) and Hans Vestberg (Ericsson) to the post, Nadella seemingly has the DirectX factor in the eyes of the board. The question is: what has them singing his praises?Engineering a moveBorn in Hyderabad, India in 1967, Nadella comes from an engineering background. He gained a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication degree from Manipal University and picked up not one, but two Master's degrees after moving to the US - a Master of Science degree in Computer Science and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Chicago. His flourishing CV caught the eye of bigwigs at internet software pioneer Sun Microsystems, where he worked until joining Microsoft in 1992. Starting out in the Windows Developer Relations group, he went on to play a helping hand in growing the company's plucky but oft-bemoaned Bing search engine and had a leading role in its now-defunct Office division (now part of the Applications and Services Engineering Group). In July 2013, the company's 'OneMicrosoft' strategy saw Nadella appointed head of the Cloud and Enterprise Engineering Group, where he was tasked with realigning cloud services including the internet-based Office 365 productivity suite. He also took charge of enterprise-centric endeavours like datacenters, databases and development tools, which headed to the cloud under the guise of Azure, Microsoft's platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offering. He didn't do badly. Microsoft says its Office 365 Home Premium, which launched in February 2013, has attracted 3.5 million subscribers in its first year. Meanwhile, Azure has seen steady growth which headed into triple figures during the company's most recent financial quarter.Tactical appointmentIf Nadella becomes the chosen one, he would be only the third CEO in Microsoft's 38-year-history after Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. It's a huge appointment and one that Ovum analyst Roy Illsley reckons is a plus for Microsoft overall. "His background and time served with the company are plus points," he says. "On the negative side this also makes him part of the Microsoft machine, and it would have been nice to see a fresh perspective from outside coming into the company." Illsley also believes his appointment would position Microsoft better in the face of recent moves from its competitors. He says: "What with IBM's announcement that it was selling x86 to Lenovo and focusing on its Softlayer cloud business, Satya is a good move from Microsoft as he heads up the cloud division. He's also come from the server and tools division so he has that 'future looking' ability coupled with an understanding of how the market delivers value to customers." According to Illsley, Microsoft's biggest challenge is focusing on its core strengths and plotting a path to move itself from its current position to "be a force in the cloud era". He also sees more gaming potential on the horizon following the launch of the Xbox One but thinks that desktops are a trickier area."While not dead, the desktop needs to be transformed so that it has the applications to deliver what enterprise and individual users want, linking the two together from a skills perspective," he adds.

The Complete Quantitative Guide To Judging Your Startup

Raising capital from investors is often a frustrating experience. While part of that frustration will always be present when working on high-risk projects, a lot of the aggravation comes from the lack of clear signposts that allow founders to judge their company’s performance. The reality is, most founders only ever hear a “yes” or a “no” from a venture capitalist, without a lucid understanding of the factors that influenced that decision.

IBM seeks to shed SDN with billion-dollar pricetag

Only a short time after selling its server business to Lenovo, IBM is reportedly seeking to sell part of its networking assets.Big Blue is reportedly looking to offload its software-defined networking (SDN) product line for as much as $1 billion (£607 million, $1.14 billion).According to a news report by Re/Code, IBM approached several companies, including Dell, HP, Cisco, Juniper and Fujitsu, to drum up any interest in the leftover assets. The New York-based firm, which is moving towards cognitive Big Data with Watson and also taking strides towards cloud computing, apparently sees the SDN unit as unimportant to the business.A hot topicThough SDN is a hot topic in networking, broad adoption of the technology is still only on the horizon for most. A survey conducted by eWeek discovered that less than 30 per cent of companies asked said that they had, or were planning to deploy, SDN.A number of SDN startups have appeared in recent years, however, including BigSwitch and Nicira, while big vendors like HP, Dell and Cisco are working on their own brands of the tech.Whether IBM's SDN business will be snapped up by another company remains to be seen, with one executive approached telling Re/Code that they needed to first understand what IBM were trying to sell and that the price tag Big Blue had set was rather optimistic.IBM has recently announced that it will be investing over $1 billion on building global data centres and is also working on implementing its Watson technology in Big Data, analytics and applications. The company is evidently trying to solidify its position as a top shelf vendor, shedding parts of the business it deems unnecessary along the way.Lenovo snaps up IBM's server business for $2.3 billion

There Is An Etsy Artist Who Cross Stitches Pop Lyrics And They Are So Perfect

Need all of these.

Etsy artist Crafty Curtis painstakingly cross stitches pop lyrics. And they're amazing.

Crafty Curtis / Via etsy.com

Each piece takes "about 12 hours", she told BuzzFeed.

"It’s hard to say because I do it in my spare time, I suppose up to 12 hours depending on the length of the lyric and all from designing the pattern to fully framing them up. I have a lead-time on most orders so I can deliver to requirements."

Crafty Curtis / Via etsy.com

She's a long-time crafter.

"I’ve been knitting since I was about 8, and then with a vengeance for the last 10ish years. I crochet as well. I started to cross stitch a few years ago – I’m sure I did it as a kid on massive aida (fabric with holes in) but it wasn’t something i’d carried on into adulthood. I’ve mainly knitted things for my nieces and nephew and friends kids before this, it is really my first major project that isn’t just about one off gifts for friends."

Crafty Curtis / Via etsy.com

Initially, the cross stitching was just a hobby.

"I came up with the idea of stitching my favourite dark lyrics, the juxtaposition of it pleased me, and it was only for personal amusement at this point that is what I did. I like the ones that sit apart from the songs, but those who know, know."

Cisco unveils fog computing to see through Internet of Things

Cisco hopes to connect the Internet of Things to cloud data centres seamlessly by using what it's calling 'fog computing'.Fog computing, the company says, will be a "highly virtualised platform that provides compute, storage and networking services between devices and cloud computing data centres". This is a solution Cisco hopes will solve main problem of connecting the Internet of Things to internet-connected devices.Cisco won't, however, be turning routers into massive data-crunching server centres any time soon. The routers will instead be used to carry out simple tasks by processing the signals between the cloud and the "Thing" that is operating within the Internet of Things. To let its routers to do the computing required to bridge the gap, Cisco plans to combine Linux with its Internetworking Operating System (IOS) to create a distributed infrastructure. The architecture, named IOx, will make it easier for users to connect to industry-specific systems.Cloudy fogAs well as lowering the amount of data that has to transferred between networks, the fog promises to help devices operate if their connection to the cloud is suddenly lost, storing their data for when the connection is re-established. "Cisco is very excited to accelerate innovation in the Internet of Things by delivering IOx, which provides the ability to combine computation and communication on our ruggedized routers and other devices," said Guido Jouret, general manager of IoT at Cisco, in a statement. "We believe that this turns the network into the fourth platform for computing, which will unleash new applications in manufacturing, transportation, smart cities and many other industries."The Internet of Things is already causing a buzz, with reports stating that the tech could be worth trillions to governments around the globe. The IoT can have its downsides, though: devices, even fridges, are all connected to the internet and can therefore be hacked. Why the internet of things will change all our lives

Refresh for latest…
Nominations for France’s César Awards, the local equivalent to the Oscar, are being announced this morning in Paris. Eyes are on Cannes Palme d’Or winner Blue Is The Warmest Color, or La Vie D’Adèle: Chapitres 1 & 2, as it’s known in French. The film is expected to score myriad nods, but as with recent years, it wouldn’t be unprecedented to see a surprise film beat out the perceived leader and garner the most mentions. While box office was relatively bleak for local films in 2013, there are other favorites out there including François Ozon’s Jeune Et Jolie, Roman Polanski’s Venus In Fur, Alain Giraudie’s Stranger By The Lake, Guillaume Gallienne’s Les Garçons Et Guillaume, A Table! and Albert Dupontel’s 9 Mois Ferme. Some of the above also played Cannes. The César ceremony will take place on February 28 in Paris with The Intouchables‘ François Cluzet presiding. Nominees follow, refresh for latest:

After Little Eye Labs Exit, India’s GSF Accelerator Goes Global

GSF, the Indian startup accelerator behind Little Eye Labs, which was acquired by Facebook earlier this year, is launching a cross-border program with increased seed funding and global exposure for its third cohort starting April this year. The GSF Global Accelerator is partnering with AngelList, a platform that helps startups find funding and employees, to manage the application and selection process for its next batch. GSF’s next batch will have eight startups from India, and the remaining four from across South East Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. “Little Eye Labs acquisition was the trigger for us to start thinking about a new model where startups could be exposed globally,” said Rajesh Sawhney who started GSF Accelerator in 2012 with support from investors including Dave McClure’s 500 Startups, InMobi founder Naveen Tewary, Blume Ventures and Kae Capital.  The next batch starting mid-April will have four stopovers — starting with four weeks in Delhi, Bangalore, followed by two weeks at Singapore’s The Hub, then two weeks on the East Coast, and the final four weeks in the Silicon Valley. All this would also mean more funding for the selected startups. GSF’s next cohorts will get $40,000-$60,000 each in seed funding as part of the new program. Earlier, the startups received $30,000 in funding after getting selected. Out of the company’s two batches of 24 startups so far, nine have have gone on to raise additional funding, and two of them have been acquired. Many Indian accelerators started with the idea of modeling on the kind of incubation provided by TechStars and Y Combinator in the U.S. But the Indian startup ecosystem is still nascent in terms of getting the global exposure. As Sharad Sharma, co-founder of iSpirt told me recently, Indian startups really need to get on the radar of newer Silicon Valley companies such as Facebook, Google and Twitter who are more acquisitive. This is an area where more investors, accelerators and think-tanks in India are beginning to focus. For its part, GSF took several of its cohorts including Little Eye Labs for a World Expedition last year, which helped exposing them to potential acquirers including Facebook and Twitter.  This year, GSF is planning demo days across important tech hubs in the world. “We’ll have four demo days — two in the U.S. and one each in Singapore and India,” said Sawhney.  Clearly, the $10-$15 million acquisition of Little Eye Labs by Facebook is

BTC China Starts Accepting Deposits In Chinese Yuan Again

BTC China, the world’s largest bitcoin exchange, has started allowing users to purchase the digital currency with Chinese yuan again. This is significant because BTC China stopped accepting deposits in renminbi last month after the People’s Bank of China issued a memo warning national financial institutions not to trade in bitcoin. That decision triggered a quick and massive drop in its value. It also hurt Bitcoin’s public image, which has taken several shots in the past few months. BTC China CEO Bobby Lee told the Wall Street Journal that the exchange started accepting renminbi again on Thursday after studying the PBOC memo and determining that it was legal to accept deposits and transfer money into customer accounts, even though the banks that manage those accounts can’t conduct business in bitcoin. Reddit users and Coindesk picked up on BTC China’s decision, even though the exchange tried to keep it low profile. BTC China has not made an official announcement and timed the change to coincide with the Lunar New Year holiday, when trading volume is low. It’s still too early to tell what impact BTC China’s decision will have on bitcoin’s value. Lee told WSJ that BTC China, which recently closed a $5 million Series A round from Lightspeed China Partners and Lightspeed Venture Partners, is treading carefully because the Chinese government can change its policies at any time. The Chinese government has taken a negative attitude toward digital currencies before. In 2009 the Chinese government banned the use of another popular digital currency, QQ, for the purchase of real-world items. Bitcoin is harder to control than QQ, however, because QQ was centrally managed by Internet company Tencent. “We are definitely in compliance with the Dec. 5 memo, but the government and the government agencies can change the rules anytime in the future. So we are going to take a wait-and-see approach,” Lee told the WSJ. We’ve emailed him for further comment.

Xbox Gamer: Has Gears of War killed off Microsoft's hot new Xbox One game?

Ladies and gents, gather, for I have a confession to make.I, an Xbox gamer, have never played a Gears of War game.Phew - well now I feel better. That little fact has been weighing on my chest all week, ever since Microsoft announced its acquisition of the Gears of War franchise from creator Epic Games. In the same breath, MS also confirmed that it had handed custody of the series over to Black Tusk Studios, where the next installment will be developed by former series producer Rod Fergusson. Grinding gearsIt's a smart move by the publisher, one which will keep the best-selling franchise exclusive to Xbox and Windows platforms. And it'll no doubt sell by the bucketload - to date, the series has shifted over 22 million games worldwide. I'll be interested to see what new direction Gears of War takes with its new curator on board, but as someone unfamiliar with the franchise, there's been something else on my mind: Just what does this news mean for the "all-original new IP" Black Tusk has supposedly been creating for the Xbox One since November 2012?Black Tusk Studios had formerly been going by the far less glamorous moniker of Microsoft Vancouver up until late 2012, when a complete rebrand was announced.Around that time, studio manager Mike Crump told local newspaper The Vancouver Sun that "we are working on Microsoft's next big franchise. We're not working on an existing franchise. We're looking to build the next Halo here in Vancouver, for example, which is really exciting. We're building something from the ground up."Microsoft backed up these claims, saying that Black Tusk was now working on the "next big entertainment franchise." Then, everything went quiet. Gears on Xbox One: Though Microsoft announced its acquisition of the GOW franchise, it didn't actually formally announce a new Gears of War game. News on that, apparently, will come "later this year," according to Hanno Lemke, general manager of Black Tusk. It's probably safe to assume that it'll be coming to Xbox One, however, and Epic Games has confirmed that it will still be around to advise on the series, ensuring a "smooth transition" between developers and platforms.Seeing sparksAt E3 the following June, hype was cranked up several notches with an explosive but more or less completely uninformative CG teaser trailer for… something. It, of course, led to plenty of questions from more astute observers. Was this the studio's new IP? Was it a game currently in development, or was it simply a very pretty tech demo? No one from the studio was willing or able to answer, but at Gamescom a few months later, the Xbox Jobs Twitter account confirmed Black Tusk's first project (presumably, whatever it was showing off that year) was "a highly ambitious, all-original new IP".Then, in the post-convention wind-down, Microsoft resumed its default radio silence on the subject. You can see the video reel here:YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90SRDi07iCIIn the news this week, there are conflicting reports as to the status of this all-original IP, what its future might hold, and even...if it ever existed at all.The same Xbox Jobs Twitter account now claims that Black Tusk has "been working on an all original IP since its inception, we've just brought the GoW franchise into our portfolio and have not yet determined the future of the new IP at this point". That doesn't sound promising. At the same time, head of Microsoft Game Studios Phil Spencer told GamesIndustry International that the CG trailer shown at E3 was a "concept piece," not a game at all, and certainly not one being put out to pasture as a result of the Gears of War acquisition."I wouldn't say things have been shelved," Spencer said. "Obviously, [Gears of War] will become a big focus of the studio and something that will be critical to them driving forward. There's not really something that was on the road map that all of a sudden goes away."Call me crazy, but something about all this just doesn't add up. Where has this IP gone, and was it ever really there to begin with? And why won't anyone tell us a gorram thing about it?In with the newGears will no doubt be huge. I might even get around to playing one of them by the time Black Tusk's effort rolls out. But, I was really looking forward to seeing something completely new, and Black Tusk seems like it has the pedigree and the resources to turn out something a little bit special. This new console generation has, so far, been clinging resolutely to the past; the majority of the Xbox One's launch titles - including Assassin's Creed IV, Killer Instinct, Forza Motorsport 5, Dead Rising 3, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Zoo Tycoon - were either sequels or reboots of existing games.Obviously, publishers will always favour known quantities, especially at the time of a new console launch as they know they'll shift consoles bundles. But now that the Xbox One is selling well and will continue to, it's time for some new blood. Titanfall's launch in March is a start, and Destinywill follow later this year in September.Of course we'll still have Halo 5 and other returning blockbusters, but I don't want a console generation that's essentially a prettier repeat of the last.Xbox One titles such as Below, a gorgeous, minimalist Roguelike, interest me far more than yet another 'shmup, even if Black Tusk is putting a rather interesting emphasis on emotionally driven, engaging writing, if this job listing is anything to go by.But wait, is this post for Gears of War or that other thing they definitely are/are not working on? I give up; it's anybody's blimming guess at this stage.More gaming columnsPlayStation games are coming to PCReal gamers appreciate the joy of player limitsWhy Virtual Reality is the future of PlayStation 4 How technology shapes the future of gamingWill the PS Vita Slim be Sony's last handheld console?

According to Rutgers the course will "explore American race, gender and sexual politics" and include looking at her alter-ego Sasha Fierce. Kevin Allred, a doctoral student and lecturer in Rutgers’ Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, says: "This isn’t a course about Beyoncé’s political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama’s inauguration weekend," adding that students will have readings from the Black feminist canon, including the writings of bell hooks, Alice Walker, and even abolitionist Sojourner Truth.NME reports the university also has a course in Bruce Springsteen Theology.

Gary Marshall: Google dumping Motorola isn't a disaster: it's a reboot

If you play chess, you'll know that it isn't always obvious what your opponent's up to from a single move. What looks like a minor play or even a rookie mistake often turns out to be a significant part of a strategy that ends with them shouting "checkmate!" and you throwing the board in their stupid gloating face. Or maybe that's just my house - but anyway, I think Google's offloading of Motorola Mobility is something similar. On its own, the sell-off looks bad: Google's ditched most of Moto - it's keeping the research and patents - for a fraction of what it paid. As Ian Fogg of IHS reports, "Lenovo's $2.91bn barely covers the cash acquired as part of Motorola Mobility." The purchase price of $12.4bn wasn't all Google spent either: it "supported the loss-making Motorola business for over two years."Not the best investment of all time, then. But you need to factor in two other news announcements. Earlier this week we saw Google and Samsung form a patent alliance to fight iOS, and just yesterday it emerged that Samsung is going to make its Android interfaces considerably less Samsung-y.In that light, Motorola is the pawn that Google's sacrificing to save a much more important piece: all of Android.Different goals, common purposeGoogle and Samsung may have different goals - Google wants to ensure that its services don't get kicked off mobile, and Samsung wants to sell hardware - but they have a common purpose in pushing Android. Despite this common purpose, from time to time they appear to be frenemies. When Google bought Motorola it instantly became a rival to Samsung as well as a partner, and when Samsung started messing with the Android UI, it could be said to have diluted the Android experience and brand. It isn't hard to imagine Google telling Samsung something like, "We'll get out of the phone business if you stop messing around with our OS and share some of your patents."There's another angle here too, and that's Lenovo. Assuming regulators don't block the sale, which is unlikely, Lenovo's just boosted its smartphone business by acquiring a brand that still has a lot of weight in the US market. As Larry Page said, "Lenovo has the expertise and track record to scale Motorola Mobility into a major player within the Android ecosystem". When you take all of these things together, it's hard to see selling Motorola as a disaster. Google retains the R&D and the patents, and gets shot of the loss-making hardware division; potential dilution of Android has been halted; Samsung's been brought closer to the mothership; and in Lenovo's hands Motorola could become a serious US rival to Samsung - which would further dilute Samsung's power and makes it much less likely that Samsung could hold Google to ransom in the future. As a result, Android is stronger and more focused than ever before. Some failure. What does Lenovo buying Motorola mean for your next smartphone?

Viacom Narrowly Beats Fiscal Q1 Earnings Forecasts With Film Cost Cuts

It wasn’t a quarter for the record books, but could have been worse. Viacom says this morning that net income improved 16.3% to $557M in the last three months of 2013 on revenues of $3.2B, -3.5%. The top line missed analyst expectations for $3.3B. Earnings from continuing operations, at $1.20 a share, were a penny ahead of forecasts. At the main Media Networks business, revenues increased 6.1% to $2.5B and operating income was up 8.2% to $1.1B. Most of the growth came from the 10% jump in fees paid by pay TV distributors, the result of rate increases. Ad sales were up 3% in the U.S. and 4% worldwide to $1.3B. But much of that was offset by Filmed Entertainment. Revenues fell 30.2% to $681M with an operating loss of $74M, a 47% improvement from the $139M loss in the period last year. Paramount had fewer releases contributing to a 52% drop in theatrical revenues, and 37% decline in home entertainment. But that also lowered the division’s costs. CEO Philippe Dauman says that the company benefited from investments in content and “our ongoing financial discipline.” He adds that with recent releases including Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, Nebraska, and Wolf Of Wall Street “Paramount is off to a strong start as the studio continues building its animation and television production capabilities alongside a promising slate for fiscal 2014.”

First look: Sky gives glimpse into its new EPG

Sky has shown off its next generation electronic programme guide, which reflects the changing nature of the UK's viewing habits.Sky's latest figures showed that on-demand viewing, both through the Sky box and connected devices using Sky Go is up, with the company's technology and apps proving to be big wins. The week of Christmas apparently saw 35 million viewing requests through connected devices, a 50 per cent rise compared to last year. Change ahoySky explains that the trend for on-demand will bring a big visual change to the electronic programme guide - describing it as the 'biggest shake up...since its introduction at the launch of digital TV in 1998. The first picture is of the EPG homepage and illustrates that on-demand is brought to the fore, with Catch Up TV, TV Box Sets, Sky+ Planner and Sky Store as well as the rather necessary TV Guide.Perhaps most importantly, search is available from the main page, reflecting the popular app that proliferates on mobile devices. "We're passionate about giving our customers their favourite content however they want to watch and will continue to make Sky's connected TV services even bigger and better during 2014, including an enhanced EPG that makes it even easier to find on demand content," explained Sky's director of TV products Luke Bradley-Jones.Obviously we do not yet know the precise launch date for the new EPG, but the suggestion is that it will be in Spring, so the wait should not be too long.

BSkyB, HBO Pact To Co-Produce “Epic” Original Dramas, Extend UK Output Deal

UK pay-TV giant BSkyB announced better-than-expected half-year operating profits this morning in London — and a major deal to expand its existing relationship with HBO. The pair has been cozy since 2010 when the Sky Atlantic channel became the “home of HBO” series. That exclusive first-run output deal will now be extended through 2020, giving Sky customers continued access to the entire HBO catalog including such shows as Game Of Thrones and Girls, as well as new series like True Detective and Looking. The extension of the pact could be worth up to £275M over five years. The partners have also committed to co-develop and produce what BSkyB CEO Jeremy Darroch calls, “epic drama of a truly spectacular scale.” The partners say they will make original drama series for broadcast on their respective networks and are looking at projects with the potential to run for multiple seasons. The high-end TV tax credit now flourishing in the UK has already brought American shows to shoot locally and this deal will likely see the Sky/HBO co-pros taking advantage of the incentives. The two companies will jointly finance the projects.

First Lady’s Rescheduled L.A. Fundraiser Raises Over $650,000; Draws Barabra Streisand & LA Mayor

Third try is a big-ticket charm for the First Family and the Democratic National Committee when it comes to getting some Hollywood cash. Paying between $1,000 and $32,4000 a pop, around 200 donors came out this evening for Michelle Obama’s DNC fundraiser at the home of Everybody Loves Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal and his wife, actress Monica Horan. As President Obama took to the road today to drum up support for last night’s State of the Union speech, Mrs. Obama made her long awaited trip out West to raise money for the Democrats’ midterm election war chest and to add another voice to that chorus. The First Lady, who earlier pre-recorded an appearance on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show set to air Thursday morning, spoke for about 20 minutes tonight, hitting many of the themes of her husband’s speech before Congress yesterday. In her speech tonight, the First Lady urged the crowd to “write a big fat check. Write the biggest check you can possibly write,” according to the White House pool report.  ”I know some of you may be tired of always being asked for money, and I understand, because it’s not always easy to ask you for it. But we do this because writing the checks is the single most impactful thing you can do right now to affect the outcome of those midterms,” she added to the ... Read More »

The Men Of "Full House" Reunited To Help Jimmy Fallon With His Nightmares

Bob Saget, John Stamos, and Dave Coulier turned back the clock in an adorable bit for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon .

Continuing his monopoly on twentysomething nostalgia, Jimmy Fallon brought in three of the most beloved early '90s father figures on Wednesday night to help sing away his Tonight Show transition blues. Bob Saget, John Stamos, and Dave Coulier reprised their Full House roles — as Danny Tanner, Jesse Katsopolis, and Joey Gladstone, respectively — and the whole thing was so adorable, you might even forget that they were comforting a 39-year-old comedian dressed in children's pajamas and sitting on a bed framed by four gigantic pencils (a la Michelle Tanner). The guys also reenacted some of their signature Full House tag lines:

Nintendo: It’s Dangerous To Go Alone! Take This.

I hate to say I-told-you-so… Who am I kidding? I love to say that. But while I’m happy about being correct, I’m sad for Nintendo. I love Nintendo. I really do. And so it pains me to see them in such a state. But I come bearing gifts. Rather than being the millionth person to advise them to move their games to smartphones, I thought I’d offer another alternative. It’s one I’ve laid out previously, and the response to it seemed positive enough that I thought it was worth elaborating upon. Because again, I want Nintendo to survive. And thrive. What Nintendo needs to do right now is create another console. They can continue support for the Wii U through their current roadmap of games, but then it’s time to call a spade a spade and put all their resources behind this new system. Here’s what I’m thinking: a $99 box built from the ground up to play retro Nintendo games. Mario. Zelda. Icarus. Donkey Kong. Pokemon. You name it. Have a bunch of titles ready to go at launch to ensure a blow-out. Release more as time goes on. But not in stores, entirely online. This device would not have any physical media. No cartridges. No optical drives. Only a hard drive and an online store. Games would be $5 to $15 depending on the title. Hundreds of titles would be available within months of launch. Thousands within the year. Stagger them. And that’s just step one. Step two of my strategy would involve updating old classics to run with updated HD graphics and new levels. New Mario. New Zelda. New Icarus. New Donkey Kong. New Pokemon. Same idea. Updated graphics. New levels. These games would be $15 to $25 depending on the game. Stagger them. There’s more: step three. Strike deals with other “retro” game makers such as Atari and Sega to license their old games and give them the same treatment. Updated graphics, new levels. Sell the games through your online store at $15 to $25 a pop. Watch the money roll in. Does anyone in their right mind doubt that such a box would be an immediate best seller? It would be massive. It would blow all the other consoles out of the water. $99! Nintendo’s strength is in nostalgia. They should be playing to that rather than trying to compete with the likes of Sony

Some Republicans See Racism As a Factor in Immigration Stalemate

“I hate to say this, because these are my people — but I hate to say it, but it’s racial,” says a Republican congressman.

Jason Reed / Reuters

WASHINGTON — For more than a year House Republican leaders have insisted the chamber would act on new immigration laws. And for more than a year, Republicans have done virtually nothing on the issue — despite intense pressure from activists, business groups, and the nation's changing demographics. And although there are a variety of reasons for inaction, one Republican lawmaker recently offered a frank acknowledgement for many members, there's one issue at play not often discussed: race."Part of it, I think — and I hate to say this, because these are my people — but I hate to say it, but it's racial," said the Southern Republican lawmaker, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "If you go to town halls people say things like, 'These people have different cultural customs than we do.' And that's code for race." There are a range of policy reasons for opposing plans to liberalize immigration or to regularize undocumented immigrants in the country, ones revolving around law-and-order concerns and the labor market. But that perceived thread of xenophobia, occasionally expressed bluntly on the fringes of the Republican Party and on the talk radio airwaves, has driven many Hispanic voters away from a Republican leadership that courts them avidly. And some Republicans who back an immigration overhaul, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and one of the Republican Party's most vocal champions of a pathway to citizenship, acknowledge that race remains a reality in the immigration debate."There will always be people [who have] different reasons for opposing the change. We have a history in this country of demagoguery when it comes [to immigration]. You know, 'Irish Need Not Apply.' There's nothing new going on today that's gone on before. This isn't the first time that there's been some ugliness around the issue of immigration," Graham said. But Graham said despite that legacy, voters, including strong majorities of Republican primary voters, are lining up behind the idea of citizenship."Here's what I don't get: When you ask primary voters in a poll would support a pathway to citizenship where you have to learn English, pay a fine and go to the back of the line, it's 60% in South Carolina," Graham said. "Nationally, it's over 70% … it seems through polling, if nothing else, that the Republican Party gets it.""There's some racist people, certainly," said Ana Navarro, a Republican strategist and advocate for immigration reform. "But I want to think it's a minority and that's not what's going to decide the immigration debate."Graham agreed, but said he is puzzled by the resistance to moving on new immigration laws in the House."I don't know. I have no idea, I have no idea. I can't explain it. I think maybe it's a fear of a primary," Graham said when asked what makes his colleagues so hesitant on the issue. With Republicans meeting in Cambridge, Md., this week to discuss, among other things, recommendations for a set of immigration policy bills, House Republicans' reluctance to touch the issue is a major facing Republicans."Part of it is the fact that most of our districts are more worried about a primary opponent instead of a general opponent. Immigration is a thing you get primaried over ... nobody is afraid of the pro-reform forces. They are afraid of the anti-reform forces," the operative said. It's confusing for Republicans when in conservative states like South Carolina, Graham said, changes to immigration policy are met with much less public skepticism than perhaps many assume."We have a tourism economy where we need workers [and] we have an agricultural economy. I think … the employers in South Carolina make a compelling case that we need workers," Graham said.Unlike abortion, Obamacare, the deficit, or federal spending, there's no organized, well-funded opposition: There are no media campaigns of note or lobbying blitzes on Capitol Hill. In short, Republicans feel pressure without any formal outside group really applying it. Instead, Republican lawmakers and operatives alike also said that while fiscal issues have been driven by large, national groups like the Club for Growth and Heritage Action, Republican reluctance to tackle immigration reform is much more a bottom-up phenomenon.Opposition to any form of citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States has long been an article of faith for Republican voters, much like opposition to any changes to Social Security are for Democrats. Immigration is now a third-rail issue in the GOP.Talk radio, particularly regional and small-market talkers, have also kept up the pressure, Republicans said, explaining that the airwaves back home are constantly filled with talk of "amnesty" that makes backing new laws difficult. Those factors, combined with the brutal beating Republicans took during the 2007 immigration reform push, means many lawmakers — even those who weren't in Congress at the time — are leery of the issue."I think it is an issue that left a scar. Even though opposing organizations are not as organized, are not as vocal this time around, people [still] see it [as] … a political time bomb," Navarro said. And then there are the pragmatic Republicans in Boehner's conference, who argue turning to immigration will distract from the party's focus on Obamacare and insist sticking to that is the better political play for the party in 2014.That argument doesn't hold much sway with advocates for new immigration laws. "I understand the desire to not distract from Obamacare. But I'm a Republican who believes we can do both. We have the momentum now," said Brian Walsh, a Republican strategist who has worked with bipartisan immigration advocacy groups. For Walsh and other similarly minded Republicans, the greatest frustration has been what they view as the outsized influence of the small cadre of Republicans in the House, talk radio hosts and activists who they say have paralyzed the party. Republicans are "listening to a loud minority … [but] those who oppose this haven't been challenged to say, 'what's their plan,'" Walsh said."They've been able to get away with yelling about part one while ignoring part two" of the political equation, he added.

Lenovo’s Motorola Mobility Buy Is Partly About The Chance To Own The Enterprise Mobile Market

Lenovo’s ThinkPad is the brand of choice when it comes to enterprise notebooks – Dell has a strong footing still, to be sure, but Lenovo dominated the PC market in 2013, followed by HP and then Dell. The acquisition of Motorola Mobility today gives them a chance to parlay that success in the traditional computing world into the booming enterprise hotspot of mobile tech. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Lenovo Chief Executive Yang Yuanqing and CFO Wong Wai Ming explained that the purpose behind the purchase was to help Lenovo enter the U.S. smartphone market and make the company a worldwide player in the smartphone market. But we’ve also learned that Lenovo has been conducting research about what customers might be looking for in a ThinkPad-style smartphone, particularly at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. Lenovo asking prospective buyers what they might expect in a ThinkPad phone doesn’t necessarily equate to a major mobile enterprise push, but there are more pieces to the puzzle to consider, too. One important one is that Lenovo made a bid for at least portions of BlackBerry, but the deal was ultimately nixed by the Canadian government since BlackBerry was so important a part of the Canadian telecommunications infrastructure. It’s true that the company already sells Android phones abroad, and that these aren’t necessarily enterprise-focused. But the ongoing demise of BlackBerry leaves a gaping hole in the industry in terms of secure devices, and so far the only company really making a concerted effort to capture the attention of that market is Samsung, which has been touting its Knox security software for Android a lot in the past few months. But Knox isn’t without its detractors, and Samsung hardly has the brand cachet that does Lenovo when it comes to building enterprise hardware. Lenovo says it will keep its Motorola brand separate in the same way it has done with ThinkPad, but that doesn’t mean it’ll keep the focus solely on consumer devices. Lenovo is clearly interested in that side of things too, as proven by its existing line of mobile hardware, but the growth opportunity in the U.S. is ironically replacing BlackBerry at the moment, so I think we’ll see an attempt by Lenovo to use Motorola to build on its strengths and give business users the phones they’ve been looking for.
